The drive to the District Attorney's office was a short one, but Ruth felt every mile in her bones. The weight of Caldwell's secrets pressed down on her, an invisible burden she couldn't shake. Beside her, Aaron sat in silence as he navigated the bustling streets. The publicity had brought a mess of mediapersons and gawkers from all over the district. Pain scavengers was what Ruth thought of them. Feeding off the misery of others. The morning sun cast a hazy glow over the town, but it did little to dispel the shadows that seemed to cling to every corner.

As they pulled into the parking lot, Ruth took a moment to steady herself. She knew that confronting Joshua Kendall would be no easy feat. The man was a formidable presence, a legal powerhouse who had risen through the ranks of Caldwell's elite with a ruthless efficiency that both impressed and unsettled her. She had crossed paths with him before, in courtrooms and at social events, but she had never quite been able to shake the feeling that there was something lurking beneath his polished veneer. Other than the obvious of course: it was an open secret that Kendall was her father-in-law Giles’ right-hand man and designated fixer.

Aaron's touch on her shoulder brought her back to the present. "You ready for this?" he asked, searching her face for any sign of hesitation.

Ruth nodded, squaring her shoulders as she stepped out of the car. "As ready as I'll ever be."

The District Attorney's office was surprisingly quiet. They passed a trio of lawyers and paralegals moving through the halls, their arms laden with case files and legal briefs. But other than that, it was business as usual. The air was thick with the scent of coffee and the hum of hushed conversations, a nervous energy that set Ruth's nerves on edge. As they made their way to Kendall's office, she couldn't help but feel like they were being watched by everyone.

Kendall's secretary, a severe-looking woman with a tight bun and a pinched expression, greeted them with a curt nod. "Mr. Kendall is expecting you," she said, her voice clipped and efficient. "You can go right in."

Ruth took a deep breath and pushed open the heavy oak door, stepping into Kendall's inner sanctum. The office was a testament to the man's power and influence, with its gleaming mahogany desk, plush leather chairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the heart of Caldwell. Kendall himself sat behind the desk, his suit impeccably tailored, his dark hair slicked back with precision. He looked up as they entered, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth that didn't quite reach his eyes.

"Agents Baker & Tate," he said, rising to shake their hands. His grip was firm, almost painfully so. "Good to see you again, Ruth. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Ruth wasted no time with pleasantries. "You need to reopen the Red Barn case," she said, not bothering with the niceties.

Kendall's smile held, taking on an amused glint.
